About

The Naval Reserve is a component of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) offering part time and full time employment from coast to coast, including here in Victoria BC. The primary mission of the Naval Reserve is to generate trained sailors for Canadian Armed Forces operations, both domestically and abroad.

Members of the Reserve Force serve part time in the Royal Canadian Navy and do not have a set term of service.
Naval Reservists are individuals engaged in their civilian lives while pursuing a military career. They work for the Navy in the evenings, on weekends and usually during the summer period, in an occupation of their choice. They can be students, teachers, police officers, lawyers, delivery persons, secretaries, or other members of society. Most Naval Reservists have careers outside of the Canadian Armed Forces in a wide variety of civilian occupations. Many are students who use the Reserve as a means of adventure, tuition assistance and development of leadership skills.

Most serve on a part time basis, with no obligation to participate in any mission overseas. However, many full-time employment opportunities and deployments are available to those Reservists who volunteer for them. You may also have the opportunity to take part in operations at home in Canada or overseas. In emergency situations or national incidents you may be called upon, but the choice to participate in any operation away from home is always yours as a reservist.
In times of natural disaster, such as the Red River (Manitoba), Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Quebec) and Saguenay River (Quebec) floods, the forest fires in the British Columbia interior, and the ice storms in southern Ontario and Quebec, the Naval Reserve has offered assistance whenever communities have needed help. Naval Reservists give up their time to contribute to their home communities, to help save lives and restore order when disaster strikes.
The typical part-time work commitment is one or two evenings every week, Tuesdays or Thursdays and one Saturday a month. During the summer you may have the opportunity to work on the East or West Coast or at Sea on a Warship. For students one thing to note is that the Naval Reserves offers guaranteed employment for the first four summers of your career. This is based upon your availability and allows you to maintain the work and home life balance that works best for you. The Reserves offer flexible employment opportunities, both full time, part time based upon your availability.
